Throwback Thursday | Katrina 10 years ago

September 10, 2015

I’m a little late on posting my 10 year throwback to Hurricane Katrina, but I ran across them today, and thought I’d share them.
Oh, the memories that flood back…we had just (only a few months earlier) signed to purchase our first house.  We actually signed knowing that another hurricane (Dennis — Category 4), was approaching the Gulf region within the next hours — not sure how “smart” that was…haha…but thankfully God kept us and our new house safe from it (it ended up hitting the FL panhandle hard, instead of our area).
We had chosen to evacuate in what seemed like several hurricanes leading up to Katrina…and, of all hurricanes, we decided we would stay and “wait Katina out” in our home.  What we didn’t ktnow was that it was going to be the Category 5 hurricane that would reek complete havok on the Gulf Coast states — including our area, though just west of us was hit harder than we were.  Again, probably not our smartest choice.  I will never forget the eerie silence during the eye of the storm, and the complete distruction for weeks and months after it was over.
Here are a few of our personal pictures of our home/neighborhood after Katrina.  Thankfully ours was not near as catastrophic as many that we knew…
During the “eye” of the storm…

Our one “good tree” that we left after cutting down all others…
should’ve cut it down, too.

A new construction demolished on our street.

And lots of uprooted trees…everywhere!
Meeko thought he was dying in the heat while the power was out…
I am so thankful for God’s protection during this horrific storm.  I wouldn’t wish to go through that ever again.  But even through the devastating storm, I will never forget how God used it to bring people together to work in unity to rebuild our Gulf and the people in it…spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically.  Our church’s “Operation:  Renewed Hope” was one of the ways we got to see that happen first hand.  I am so thankful that God always works, even in ways we cannot see…always for our good and His glory!
